Behind every high-performing team is an HR professional who are also mental health stewards. Mental health challenges are common in the working population and represent a significant concern with potential impacts on both employees and organizations. Employees experiencing mental health issues are at greater risk of absenteeism, job attrition or unemployment, and a reduced quality of life.¹ For organizations, these issues can lead to decreased productivity and overall performance.
LaMontagne et al. proposed an integrated model to address mental health in the workplace by targeting modifiable risk factors. It focuses on three key strategies: (1) protecting mental health by reducing work-related risks, (2) promoting it through positive work environments and strengths-based approaches, and (3) addressing existing mental health issues regardless of their cause. This model provides a comprehensive approach to fostering well-being at work.2
Where to start?
A practical entry point is improving mental health literacy and promoting early intervention. One effective approach is to incorporate Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). MHFA is developed to educate the public on how to support individuals developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis. Since then, MHFA has been adapted for workplace settings to equip employees and leaders with the practical skills needed to offer timely, compassionate, and appropriate support.
MHFA in the workplace provides clear, consensus-based guidelines on how to respond to colleagues in distress, fostering supportive environments without overlapping with performance management roles.3 Aligned with the third thread of the integrated approach, MHFA offers a structured yet adaptable framework that encourages early recognition of mental health concerns, reduces stigma, and supports overall workplace well-being.
